The Vision
The vision behind the Bafokeng Sports Campus is three-fold:
- to create Africa’s leading sports training destination for top-end athletes, coaches, referees and administrators;
- to identify and develop promising young talent, giving children the best possible chance to fulfill their dreams; and
- to attract sports tourists to a location that provides world-class accommodation, sports action and a taste of the African bush.
The project enjoys the support of global sports leaders, as well as the financial backing of Royal Bafokeng Holdings, a US$4 billion community-based investment company. The Bafokeng Sports Campus is conveniently located 30 minutes from the Pilanesberg international airport, and visitors can enjoy an authentic safari experience at the nearby Pilanesberg Game Reserve, home to the big five. The world-renowned Sun City Complex, offering abundant entertainment opportunities, is also within close proximity.
The Location
Welcome to South Africa: a sprawling land of open spaces, clear skies and magnificent weather, where sportspeople are able to experience new freedom, openness, clarity and comfort. Welcome to the North West Province, a malaria-free zone where the climate is temperate, even in winter; where there is valuable altitude; and where special additional features - like roaming wildlife, nearby game reserves and proximity to top entertainment resorts and golf courses - are widespread. Welcome to Phokeng, home of Bafokeng Sports Campus.Ownership
The Bafokeng Sports Campus development is currently 100% owned by Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), which is responsible for the management and development of the commercial assets of the Royal Bafokeng Nation (a nation of some 310 000 people). As at end-December 2008, the pro-forma value of the investments under management by RBH was over R22 billion, across the spheres of mining, industry, finance, manufacturing, services and sport. Royal Bafokeng Sports, a subsidiary, is tasked with developing the Nation's commercial sporting activities, including the management of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace (South Africa's only privately owned sports stadium). Royal Bafokeng Sports also owns Premier Soccer League club Platinum Stars FC and controls Currie Cup rugby franchise Platinum Leopards.
The Environment
Being environmentally responsible is not a one-day job. It is a commitment; one that Bafokeng Sports Campus has adopted for life. It is constantly furthering its vision to reduce its impact on the environment, while always upholding the high-quality experience that visitors expect.
To begin with, the entire hotel is 100% eco-friendly, from double-glazed windows to improve thermal performance, to specially designed and treated ceilings and roofs that necessitate less heating in winter and less air-conditioning in summer.
Then, the development has its own electrical sub-station, backed by generators for the main hotel and two fields. Additional energy efficiency is also ensured by the innovative evaporative water cooling/heating system, linked to the air-con, the geyser and the heated hotel pool.
